About
Labyrinths
The
11-circuit "Chartres" labyrinth was
first inlaid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral (France) in the 12th
century, where it remains to this day. It is believed to have
been walked as a path of prayer, often in the spirit of pilgrimage. Today,
there is a rapidly growing renewal of interest in the labyrinth,
as countless numbers worldwide discover its many gifts.
The labyrinth is universal and can be used by everyone, no matter what
their religious beliefs, tradition or background. Whereas there
are several different types of labyrinths, the Chartres is particularly
powerful and effective, as it was designed according to the laws
of sacred geometry. This
ancient science was once used to design architectural forms, including
cathedrals and, yes, the Chartres labyrinth itself. Proportion,
balance and placement are all utilized to create forms that inspire
peace, balance and clarity to the human mind. Lest you think such
an ancient science is no longer relevant in our modern world, remember
that our own spiral DNA shows us all to be constructed of geometry! Such
a powerful connection between humans and the art and science of sacred
geometry makes the Chartres labyrinth, in particular, a deeply effective
spiritual tool.
When approached with a quiet mind and open heart, the labyrinth's gifts
include:
* a profound sense of peace
* stress reduction
* clarity of life direction
* insight into life situations and transitions
* heightened creativity
* healing
* renewed energy
* help with dealing with the grief process
* a deepened relationship with the Divine (however you intrepret
the term)
The finger labyrinth, such as the ones created and sold here by LJP
Creations, offers the same gifts as the "walking" labyrinth,
but in a portable, more accessible form. Finger
labyrinths are even more ancient than those we assume were meant
to be walked, so these more portable variations are "real" labyrinths
and have their roots in antiquity, as do the larger models.
There is no "wrong" way to utilize the labyrinth. It
is NOT a maze, and is not meant to confuse or be "figured out". You
simply trace the path to the center with your finger at your own
pace, remain in the center as long as you feel led, and then return
by retracing the same path.
Joy Johnson Thomason of LJP Creations has written a guidebook that
contains additional information on the finger labyrinth, as well as
suggestions for making this profound tool a deeply effective addition
to your spiritual path. It is
available in Our Shoppe for those who wish to become better acquainted
with this amazing and life-affecting tool.
At the very least, using the finger labyrinth in your spiritual practice
will gift you with a profound sense of peace. For many, however,
the labyrinth is a significant spiritual tool that leads to a deeper
understanding of Self, and a closer, more vibrant relationship with
the Divine.
