Each one of our Black Madonna sculptures are handmade by Joy Johnson Thomason.  Her interest in these potent Madonnas deepened as a result of her exploration and dedication to the Chartres labyrinth.  From there, a special devotion to Notre Dame de Sous Terre (one of two Black Madonnas located within Chartres Cathedral) developed, and Joy was guided to create these sculptures.  Joy explains:  “These figures are not meant to be exact replicas of any particular Black Madonna, but, rather, seek to capture the essence of their beauty, mystery, power and comforting presence.”  Each sculpture has a small sphere attached, representing both the total of all creation and the individual Self.  An info sheet is included.  We offer these sculptures in two sizes:  Large (approx. 6” tall) and Small (approx. 3.5” tall). 

Joy has also created a special meditation lantern specifically in honor of the Black Madonna.  Like our other lanterns, each is handpainted and is cleansed with salt water prior to painting.  This lantern’s predominant color is very deep purple, with black and silver highlights.  It is surrounded by a silvertone “necklace” which features a small, individually-made Black Madonna (approx. 1” tall) and a contrasting stone.  A jumbo tealight and brochure is included.  Lantern measures approx. 4” x 6”.

We now offer wearable art in the form of Labyrinth and Black Madonna pendants.  The Madonnas are each individually handmade by Joy, are approx. 1” high, and come on an adjustable black ribbon.  Labyrinths are attached to individually handmade clay medallions, which come in your choice of black or temple gold.  A small symbol representing the Divine “spark” within each of us is seen on the reverse side; each  medallion measures approx. 1.5” in diameter and comes on an adjustable black cord.  Both styles of pendants come with a small black gift pouch.
